Deakin University develops new lithium metal battery with better performance after heating

According to foreign media reports, as early as 2016, Australia's Deakin University (Deakin University) established a battery research and development center BatTRI-Hub, dedicated to promoting the progress of energy storage technology. Recently, the center announced the creation of a lithium metal battery prototype with interesting characteristics. The 1Ah flat soft pack battery core uses a lithium metal anode, which can store 50% more energy than the existing battery core. In addition, the battery cell also uses an ionic liquid electrolyte, a salt that exists in liquid form at room temperature, which is several levels superior to the current mainstream technology. Professor Patrick Howlett, director of the research center, said: "Ionic liquids are not volatile and are not easy to catch fire. Unlike the electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries of companies such as Tesla and Samsung, such liquids will not explode." Not only that, but the battery performs better when it is heated, eliminating the need for expensive and cumbersome cooling systems to prevent the battery from overheating. Theoretically, this could result in a battery that prefers to charge and discharge at a high rate, as opposed to current lithium batteries. Batteries that like to be heated may not be suitable for handheld devices or laptops, but they are very suitable for electric vehicles, because how to dissipate heat is one of the main problems in electric vehicles. It should be noted that this type of battery has the best performance at high temperatures. Dr. Robert Kerr, the project leader, said: "The use of lithium metal electrodes in lithium metal batteries is not common in the battery industry, so little is known about the best way to actually produce such batteries. However, after years of dedicated research, our team has developed this 1.7 Ah cell, and the cell is about to enter mass production, which is an important milestone for the battery field."
